French Subjunctive Phrases: List of Words and Expressions.

That’s the theory, but in practice, it’s a little easier to understand because, in modern French, the choice of subjunctive or indicative is almost entirely determined by what comes before it. The simple rule is that some verbs are followed by the subjunctive and some are followed by the indicative.

Both conjugations are indicative. Looking at the subjunctive—another French mood— can clarify when to use the indicative. The subjunctive mood is used to express doubts, emotions or uncertainty.

In this lesson you will learn the basics of understanding the subjunctive (le subjonctif) tense in French. Too many non-native speakers this can be one of the hardest parts of learning the language. My goal here is to demystify the subjunctive by providing some good example phrases.

This lesson discusses the formation of the subjunctive mood. The subjunctive is far more frequently used in French than in English. It can express desires, emotions, necessities, and doubts, among.

There are 10 indicative verb tenses in French grammar, but some of these are restricted to written language. Subjunctive. The indicative describes concrete reality- that which is happening, happened, or will happen. The subjunctive expresses a reality that isn't concrete- what someone wants to happen or what might happen, for example. In the following sentences, the subjunctive is used in the phrases expressing what someone wants- volition.

Connecteurs logiques. French connectives are links: they combine words, phrases, or sentences. Connectives do not constitute a single part of speech, but rather a category of terms including all conjunctions and prepositions as well as certain types of adverbs and pronouns used in this way.

A little bit about these phrases. We didn’t just invent these phrases. We’ve extracted the most common uses of the subjunctive from native speakers using a “corpus” (enormous body of native Spanish text), so we are sure that these are absolutely the most useful Spanish subjunctive phrases to memorise.

Phrases that take the subjunctive in French.. Some verbs can be used with both the indicative and the subjunctive, but we need to be aware of the change in meaning: the subjunctive adds a sense of uncertainty. Examples: Il semble qu’il est encore en forme. He seems like he’s still in shape.

Phrases which are followed by the word che (that) generally use il congiuntivo. In fact there are very few situations in Italian that require the subjunctive where che doesn't appear! Any verbs in the phrase before the che will be conjugated normally, meaning that you add an ending to make them agree with the person doing the action or the verb tense (past, present, future).
